the anatomy of a knight
An Illustrated Guide to Medieval Plate Armour… or is it?
The Anatomy of a Knight is a 24-page, 3 color, riso printed zine. Initially framed as an informative zine about medieval armor, it tells a tragic love story about two knights in between the lines.
Knights have always fascinated me, both visually and conceptually. They symbolize loyalty and devotion, bravery and virtue. The dynamic between the wearer of the armor and the person helping them put it on is interesting: who protects the protector? And when does unwavering loyalty become a selfish act?
The Anatomy of a Knight was originally created and produced as my thesis project. As part of the project, I ran a marketing campaign on instagram and organized a preorder. Based on this, I printed a limited run of 50 saddle stitched zines, and sold the leftovers at various conventions and markets.
droom weg | the (non) existence of pym
In 2023 I minored in Graphic Novel at AKV St. Joost, during which I worked on developing, writing and illustrating my own comic, then called the (non)existence of Pym. At the end of the semester, all of the 80 or so pages had been fully sketched out, and 10 of them completely finished.
For my graduation internship at Dutch Venture Publishing (September to December 2024), I was given the opportunity to continue working on the (non) existence of Pym and turn it into a fully finished graphic novel, published under DVP.
We translated the script, which had originally been written in English, back to my native Dutch and renamed the graphic novel Droom Weg (roughly translating to Dream Away) to better fit DVP’s Dutch audience, and I spent the next few months reworking and finishing up the now nearly 100 pages and illustrating a new cover to go along with them. The final product is available in Dutch stores, and I’ve since self published the English translation, The (non)existence of Pym, which is available in my store.
available now
Pym is een eenzame student die zelden hun appartement verlaat. Die vindt toevlucht in slaap, waar alles even verdwijnt.
Growth zine
Growth is a zine by Studio Hubris about personal growth, from the perspective of three different illustrators – each with their own view on the subject. The zine is perfect bound and consists of 44 pages, 32 of which fully illustrated, divided into three chapters.
Studio Hubris consists of 3 illustrators:
Wout Kruijer, who illustrated the chapter Optimism, about how we’re ever growing and changing and the comfort that brings, Ilektra Kantarzoglou, whose chapter Metamorphosis focuses on the cycle of growth people experience during their lives, both physical and mental, and Sarah van Zoggel (me) – in my chapter, Melancholy, I explore the idea of growth as a beautiful but terrible thing that cannot be reversed once it has taken place.
The front and back cover and the illustrations below are all done by me.
